SCH-12184 Blind willow, sleeping woman Haruki Murakami

A young man accompanies his cousin to the hospital to check an unusual hearing complaint and recalls a story of a woman put to sleep by tiny flies crawling inside her ear; a mirror appears out of nowhere and a nightwatchman is unnerved as his reflection tries to take control of him; a couple's relationship is unbalanced after dining exclusively on exquisite crab while on holiday; a man follows instructions on the back of a postcard to apply for a job, but an unknown password stands between him and his mysterious employer. In each one of these stories Murakami sidesteps the real and sprints for the surreal. Everyday events are transcended, leaving the reader dazzled by this master of his craft. Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman is Murakami's most eclectic collection of stories to date, spanning five years of his writing. An introduction explains the diversity of the author's choice.

The island of Cephallonia is now familiar as the setting of the novel, Captain Corelli's Mandolin . This book explores the turbulent history of the island, focusing on the World War II years of Italian occupation, as well as telling the behind-the-scenes story of how the film version was made. As most buildings on Cephallonia fell to rubble in a 1953 earthquake, the way it would have looked in World War II had to be recreated by sets built for the filming of Louis de Bernieres' now legendary Captain Corelli's Mandolin . But do not expect the novel to be reproduced so faithfully because that is not the film-makers' style. They add their own visions, carefully explained here in an official companion to the movie, and de Bernieres' introduction shows how he anticipated that. All he could do to ensure respectful treatment of his novel was insist it should not be sold to Hollywood. The history of the filming is itself fascinating - the search for the cast, the locations, even the guns for the massacre of the Italians by the Germans and the other battle sequences. Film journalist Clark has done a good job here, aided and abetted by the stunning Greek island setting and ample action and character stills from the film.

SCH-12084 Cane Jean Toomer

A series of vignettes exploring African American life as it relates to social, political and family dynamics. For many, Cane is considered a literary masterpiece from visionary writer, Jean Toomer. He presents a diverse collection of tales with distinct and vibrant characters who populate a world that's all too familiar. HEADLINE: Jean Toomer delivers a vivid depiction of America in the early twentieth century that centers the Black experience, consisting of family, religion, romance and race. It's a detailed work of fiction that's closely rooted in reality. A collection of disparate stories illustrating the challenges and motivations of Black people in the United States. The author uses poetry and imagery to create a world that's recognizable but also unique. In Seventh Street, the narrative follows the happenings of a historic neighborhood with links to World War I and Prohibition. There's also Blood Burning Moon, which highlights a volatile love triangle that leads to tragic results. It's an insightful read that introduces outsiders to a different point of view. Jean Toomer's Cane is highly revered for its unique structure and compelling storytelling. It presents a brilliant contrast of rural and urban living, while acknowledging the racial disparities of both. This modern classic was crucial in establishing and cementing Toomer's literary legacy. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Cane is both modern and readable.

SCH-12083 Middlesex Jeffrey Eugenides

As the Age of the Genome begins to dawn, we will, perhaps, expect our fictional protagonists to know as much about the chemical details of their ancestry as Victorian heroes knew about their estates. If so, Eugenides (The Virgin Suicides) is ahead of the game. His beautifully written novel begins: "Specialized readers may have come across me in Dr. Peter Luce's study, 'Gender Identity in 5-Alpha-Reductase Pseudohermaphrodites.' " The "me" of that sentence, "Cal" Stephanides, narrates his story of sexual shifts with exemplary tact, beginning with his immigrant grandparents, Desdemona and Lefty. On board the ship taking them from war-torn Turkey to America, they married-but they were brother and sister. Eugenides spends the book's first half recreating, with a fine-grained density, the Detroit of the 1920s and '30s where the immigrants settled: Ford car factories and the tiny, incipient sect of Black Muslims. Then comes Cal's story, which is necessarily interwoven with his parents' upward social trajectory. Milton, his father, takes an insurance windfall and parlays it into a fast-food hotdog empire. Meanwhile, Tessie, his wife, gives birth to a son and then a daughter-or at least, what seems to be a female baby. Genetics meets medical incompetence meets history, and Callie is left to think of her "crocus" as simply unusually long-until she reaches the age of 14. Eugenides, like Rick Moody, has an extraordinary sensitivity to the mores of our leafier suburbs, and Cal's gender confusion is blended with the story of her first love, Milton's growing political resentments and the general shedding of ethnic habits. Perhaps the most wonderful thing about this book is Eugenides's ability to feel his way into the girl, Callie, and the man, Cal. It's difficult to imagine any serious male writer of earlier eras so effortlessly transcending the stereotypes of gender. This is one determinedly literary novel that should also appeal to a large, general audience

SCH-12171 Candide Voltaire
